Welcome to our new pier crew chief Jason. Jason hales from south Georgia where he was in the brick business for 25 years. Ten of those years he owned his own company. He moved to Bay County in 2012 and subsequently was hired by Bay County in 2014. He loves the outdoors and especially fishing so he should fit in well at our pier. The newly completed pier repair was Jason’s welcome to his new position and the first big project he had to direct. The new floor is in with the 100 new panels. This replaced most of the end Tee. The repair will be an ongoing project as budget permits. It will take several years to complete the entire 1500 feet of the pier floor. This phase was a $40,000.00 expense and the Recreation Director hopes they will get at least that amount in their next budget. Again, a big thanks to Jason and all the Recreation Department Staff as they worked through the heat to complete this much needed maintenance. New pier rules and cast net restrictions have been posted. The location of the cast net restriction has moved to just outside of the middle Tee and the new rules include a three rod maximum for each angler to take onto the pier.

“June grass” algae is with us and the water is very green. The water temperature is warm and ranged between 85 - 88 degrees during the week. We have lots of bait around. Yesterday, I caught Alewives, Cigar minnows (round scad), Goggle Eyes (big eyed scad), Scaled Sardine, Threadfin Herring, Choffers and small Hardtails. Tarpon are still coming through although the numbers have dropped considerably. There were several hooked but multiple hook-ups were limited to a couple of evenings. Kings were absent again with only one hitting the deck until today. A nice size King was decked. Hachid got the first oneSunday on a lure. Dylan’s daughter, Pasleigh, holds Hachid’s King for the picture. Spanish are not much better as only a few small ones hit the pier. Red Drum were thick in the shallows. Ladyfish and small Hardtails were a common catch.

Red Drum were the only consistent catch as they prowled the shallows eating almost anything in their path. A vast majority of the catches were over-slot and had to be returned to the water. Lures and live Alewives worked well. Dylan P. and his daughter Pasliegh, Tommy L. and Blaze show the Reds they caught.
