Heat Is On

Event Start Date: 2023/08/16

2023/08/16

We had another week of clean but hot water. The temps for us were no better so we had to be sure we stayed hydrated. Flipper was a constant nuisance the entire 7 days and ate more fish than we decked. King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Bonita, Mahi, Ladyfish, Red Drum, Hardtails, Alewives and a few Cigar minnows were the species caught.

Thursday morning started with a great Bonita bite with over a dozen hitting the deck before they disappeared. Then a few Kings ate with Flipper taking a big fish Jemel hooked. Jose was able to deck an 18.5-pound King without losing any of it to Flipper. There were also a few Spanish caught.

Friday saw Brenda finally deck her first King of the year. That seems strange but the bite hasn’t been great. Several other anglers were much later getting their first fish this year.

The weekend was mostly un-eventful. A few Kings Saturday mid-morning on Gotchas.

Monday was frustrating as Flipper ate all four Kings that bit. Shallow water was holding Bull Reds and Mark decked an over-slot fish.

Tuesday morning there were three Mahi spotted but only one was caught. Then Flipper showed up and got a big Bonita that John hooked. Mark got another Bull Red in the shallows.

Today we caught 4 small King Mackerel, a few baby Bonita and a few Spanish Mackerel. This was the only day we had without Flipper. However, he did arrive late afternoon. We had a special visitor today as our friend, Paul came down for the day. We enjoyed getting to visit with him and marvel how great he looks at 92 years old. He hopes to get back down and fish with us again this winter.
