Pier Mahi

Event Start Date: 2022/06/18

2022/06/18

The water clarity has been great with the temp reaching as high as 85 degrees.  Bait numbers have increased with Cigar minnows, Scaled Sardines and Alewives around most of the week. King catches were limited to Friday. A few Spanish were around most days. Mahi were here Thursday. A few Red Drum were in the shallows. Schools of Tarpon are increasing in frequence and the first of the year was caught on the County. Hardtails and Ladyfish were caught most days. Remora have been thick and made it almost impossible to cast natural bait for Kings.

Thursday was great for Mahi as ther were 15 to 20 caught. Jose caught the first one before Brandon, Carlos and other anglers got in on the action. Most were “chicken” dolphin but Carlos decked a bigger fish in the afternoon. Jigs was the preferred bait but they ate natural bait too. Late afternoon, Casey B. hooked the first Tarpon and was able to bring it pier side. Hopefully this was the fIrst of many to be caught.

Friday was our only King day and three fish hit the deck. Jose got biggest that was about 15 pounds. It was caught on a frozen Cigar minnow. Two other small ones were decked. A couple of Bonita were caught. Jesus wasone of the anglers to get a Bonita.  Casey got another Tarpon bite that lasted one jump.

Skinny water action was slow but Gary B. did manage to get one 34 inch Bull Red Drum to eat.

The weekend was mostly dead with a few Spanish, Hardtails and Ladyfish. Tarpon schools passed through but only a couple of fish looked at bait.

Today, Wednesday, the early morning Spanish bite was fair with a few fish hitting the deck. Later in the afternoon, a few more Spanish came in like this one that Carlos caught. Slick got rolled on by a Tarpon but the line broke as he set the hook.
