When Will The Kings Arrive

Event Start Date: 2022/09/10

2022/09/10

Water conditions were slightly stained part of the week. The temperature remains very warm. Available live bait continues to be Alewives and small Hardtails. Kings were missing except for a couple of under size fish. Red Drum were schooled up in the shallows. Spanish Mackerel were caught provided you were there at the right times. Bonita were around in good numbers but were a challenge to convince to bite. Large Hardtails were hitting bubble rigs and small live bait. Ladyfish made their appearance too. Tarpon are few but still willing to bite.

Bonita have been consistent for several weeks. This week we spent a lot more time trying to convince one to bite. Schools of 25 fish would swim over, under and around your bait as though it wasn’t even there. Then, one would blow up on a bait. You could fish all day to maybe get one shot at hooking one. Monday, I managed to get two bites only to lose one of my fish to “Flipper”. At least I got a third back. Nory decked one as well.

Spanish Mackerel bit the best at daylight and then sporadically the rest of the day. Most fish were small with several below the 12 inch limit. You could get your limit if you were there at the right times and were patient. Bubble rigs with small spoons seemed to work better than other common lures.

Tarpon sightings have slowed to only a few all week. However, 4 were hooked this week with one brought pier side. David B. hooked two Monday morning and Brandon and Carlos each hooked one Monday afternoon. Carlos was able to bring his fish to the pier for a quick picture before releasing it. Carlos’ fish hit a Colt Sniper.

We have had a lot of Red Drum hanging out in the skinny water for a few weeks. This week was no different. As usual, they would ignore all forms of bait for a while then turn on and eat. Several big “Bulls” were caught and released like the one Chuck got Tuesday.
