We had a mixed week with good water clarity then dirty water and finally clearing again. Water temperature started around 75 then down to 66 and now warmed back to 70. Kings have been sparce with Sunday giving up our best bite of the week during the strong winds. However, the wind trashed the water clarity. Spanish are still here and the Pompano bite has been a catching bonanza. Sunday produced over 100 Pompano to the crowded rail of anglers as well as a great Bonita bite. A few Red Drum were caught, one big Black Drum and Cobia sightings improved. At least one Jack Crevelle hit the deck. Cigar minnows and Spanish Sardine were sporattic.
Again this week, the Pompano hole produced hundreds of Pomps. The rail space was a premium and pier staff placed tape on the rail 6 feet apart to maintain social distancing. Some anglers had to take turns on the rail to allow access. Catching your limit was no problem. Jigs, Sand Fleas and fresh dead shrimp got a bite.
The Spanish Mackerel bite was still good. Multiple catches were common using Gotchas and Jigs.
King Mackerel action was poor except Sunday. The wind was howling and getting a bait to drift was a challenge. Anglers endured. A few Kings hit the deck along with several that were lost. Sunday also produced around 15 Bonita.
Cobia action improved with multiple fish spotted throughout the week. Several were hooked and lost with one decked. More fish were bombed with numerous jigs to no avail. Allan lost his first ever Cobia hooked yesterday due to a failed leader snap. It hit a Gotcha as he was casting for Spanish.
Red Drum were prowling and several were caught. Guy decked a “Big Ugly” on a Pompano jig. Paul B. got his share of Reds mostly using live Pin fish. Yesterday, he had his stamina tested when he hooked a 37.5 inch “Bull”. It peeled off line so fast we thought he had another shark. The Red fought hard but Paul held his own too. He had already fought a Shark and barely had time to catch his breath before the Red hit. A quick photo and it swam off healthy.
