We began our week with dirty water and no bait. The Pompano bite continued for a third week. A few Bonita showed and a couple of “Axe Handle” Spanish. Kings are still somewhere else. Blue fish are in and later in the week, the Hardtails came in. Rail space in the Pomp hole is scarce and Hardtail fishermen have taken over the bar out onto the Tee.
The Spanish Mackerel have been a few here and there. Early and late day is the best option. Sabiki rigs have out performed Gotchas. Victor and Carlos set the bar high with a couple of big Spanish. Victor’s fish was 4.65 pounds and Carlos’ fish was 3.62 pounds.
The hot spot was the Pompano hole yet again. Rail space was taken early mornings with set rods lining the pier. The bite was heavy at times with several fish at once being tossed over the rail. Sand fleas on set rods and jigs tipped with fleas or “Fishbites” worked well. One morning I counted 22 set rods sticking up in the rail covering almost half of the Pomp area. Get there early if you want to get in on the spot.
Sunday was the best day of the period with Bonita, Cobia, Blues, Hardtails and Red Drum being caught. Brenda joined in on the Bonita bite and put a couple on the deck. All week, three Cobia were caught and all by anglers visiting from West of us as their piers are closed. Jeremy from Pensacola brought a nice one to the gaff Sunday for the second one that day.
Our pier is still operating with the Covid 19 restrictions and only fishermen are allowed access. We are still under the 6 feet spacing as shown in the posted signage. Pier staff noticed the signs posed a risk with the sharp upper edge that extended above the rail. KUDOS to them as they installed a guard over the top of the sign to protect anglers from the edge.
