Water temps have heated up and hit as high as 87 during the week. The clarity is good and has improved over the past few days. The Tarpon bite had slowed considerably but was better today. Several groups of Tarpon passed by the end tee with two hooked. The King bite has been sporadic but good this week with “Flipper” throwing a wrench in the action frequently. It seemed as we could not get a day without several Dolphin stealing our bait and fish. Bonita were thick several days with quite a few hitting the deck. Big bull Red Drum have been consistent in the skinny water. Hardtails, Blue fish and Lady fish have been plentiful. There have been a few Spanish Mackerel but you had to get them in quick or “Flipper” took them. Alewives, small Hardtails and a few Goggle Eyes have been a regular sight.
The Kings have made a comeback mostly early mornings and late evenings with a few thrown in during the day. Thursday was one of our better days as several big fish were hooked and decked. I got a 25.5# before lunch then a few minutes later Tiger hooked a King well over 30#. “Flipper” chased it down and took everything. About lunch Tiger hooked a 22.5# fish on a spoon. Several more scoolies were hooked and “Flipper” took his normal tax amount. Willy or “show up/hook up” as I call him, walked onto the pier and got slammed on his second cast. He decked a fat 19.5# King. The rest of the week saw a few more fish and a few lost to the “tax man Flipper”. This morning there was a short King run with 5 fish caught. A visiting angler, on his last day here, got a nice King. Tommy L’s. daughter Macaela was here visiting and got her quarry too.
The Tarpon tournament ended July 31 and the number of anglers targeting them has dropped sharply. The run of Tarpon has dropped as well but today there seemed to be a spirt of fish swimming by. I was lucky enough to sight fish and hook two. One was brought to the pier and released before lunch. The other was about an hour later and it put on quite an air show. It jumped three times 4-6 feet out of the water and did a complete flip before ripping line again. The fight was going well until the main gear in my reel gave up. I struggled a little while longer before I broke the line.
