We continue to enjoy clean water although it is getting warm. Winds have been favorable in the afternoons. Bait has been Alewives with a few baby Bonita and small Hardtails. Red Drum have been in the shallows part of the week. Kings and Spanish have been scarce with a slight better bite late afternoons. Hardtails, Pin fish and Remora are thick. “Flipper” seems to have taken up residency at the pier. The summer crowds have thinned so rail space is easier to get and parking spaces are plentiful.
Three days we had a Sailfish come by slashing free bait but showed no interest in our offerings. Tarpon have slowed to a trickle with only a couple hooked all week. A small Tiger Shark was hooked briefly this afternoon.
King Mackerel seemed to have taken a vacation this week as only a few were caught. A few small fish were decked over the weekend. Dan got a snake Monday afternoon on a X-Rap. Tuesday was the best day with four Kings hooked but only one decked. I lost two at the gaff with a pulled hook and “Flipper” ate another one. Eli, from Jefferson, Georgia, was here on vacation. I passed off a King to him and he fought it like a pro. He decked his first ever King that weighed 12 pounds 10 ounces. Later that afternoon, I finished my day with a 12 pound 10 ounce summer Bonita. All the fish on Tuesday ate Alewives. Today (Wednesday) the bite was zero!
