The water started the week both dirty and dark. As the week progressed, the dirt settled and we experienced dark coffee colored water. By today, the water began to return to green with just a little silt. It is a vast improvement over last week. The water temperature went up slightly but will be dropping over the next few days as we have an early cool front on us with morning lows in the upper 50’s. Bait was scarce early week but today we had a few Cigar minnows, Threadfin Herring and Alewives. Tarpon schools are occasionally passing headed east on their return migration. The Pelicans and Gulls continue to be a nuisance and are being entangled daily. “Flipper” is still around but not as frequently as before. Spanish have been caught in good numbers early and late each day. A few Kings have come in as well. A few Red Drum are around and Sheepshead are gathering on the pilings. Flounder are missing at this point. A few Pompano are being caught but most are very small.
There were several Kings caught the last half of the week. The bite has been mostly early mornings but a few were decked in the afternoons. Natural bait and X-Raps were productive. There were more fish missed than caught but at least we are seeing more fish. Locals, Tommy and George both decked Kings. Today we had 2 decked and 2 lost. Jerry, visiting from Dawsonville, Georgia got a 14 pound 13 ounce King on his pink X-Rap.
Spanish have been the mainstay to keep us from being bored to tears, Very early mornings produced good catches and yesterday there were “Axe Handle” Spanish decked. Tommy got one that was close to 5 pounds. Several other large Spanish made their way into coolers too.
In other action in the “skinny water”, Reds and Pompano were on the list. Brenda caught one of the few legal size Pompano and Frendie landed a slot Red.
Again this week, Bay County Recreation staff came to the aid of Pelicans hopelessly tangled in fishing gear. Without their assistance, these birds would suffer needlessly and endure a slow death. THANK-YOU Bay Co. Rec. staff! We appreciate all you do.
