We began our week with fishable water that slowly improved until Tuesday evening. Tuesday, we had good supplies of Cigar minnows, Scaled Sardine and even a few Threadfin Herring. Then Wednesday morning the water was trashed again and no bait. “Zeta” was about 500 miles SW of us but still having an influence on our waters. Water temperature is holding around 77. It was a slow 7 days and if you didn’t fish Tuesday, you missed a majority of the action.
Early Tuesday morning, Kings and Sailfish got the day started. Two Sailfish were hooked with one brought to the pier. Tom C. had a spectacular ariel show when his Sailfish greyhounded over and over before he brought the fish pier side for a quick release. Then John hooked his Sailfish only to watch the line peel off his reel like a blur. This fight ended when the last wrap of line left the spool. Along with the Sails, Kings made a showing. Five Kings would hit the deck before the bite cooled around 09:00. Second shift anglers got started around noon. I got slammed about 1:00 as I drifted a live Cigar minnow. After one good run, Rowell made quick work with his gaff and the 15# fish was on the deck. Then Rowell and an unknown angler would get their chance. Both fish were decked.
Spanish were a little more active with some larger fish in the mix. Early mornings and late afternoons continued to be the prime times to target them. Most were caught with lures but a few ate natural bait. Greg was visiting from Indiana and had fun catching several nice Spanish. As you can see by the blood splatter on his shirt and arm, he was initiated to Spanish fishing.
Steve L. and Mark F. worked other species and were not disappointed. Steve invited this 20 inch Flounder for dinner. Tuesday,Mark and crew put a hurt on slot Red Drum. A few other Reds were caught by other anglers.
