Water conditions have been a mixed bag as the shallows were mostly dirty. However, the end tee was not so bad. The temperature has held between 73-75 degrees. Bait has been scarce with a few short brackets of time where schools would pass through.
The King bite has been a disappointment for weeks. We started this report period the same. As the weekend approached, things got a little better with a few fish Friday morning. Then, the Saturday surprise came early morning and lasted from daybreak until about 11:00am. The bite was on fire like we have not seen in months. Fish were skying with and slashing bait and lures in schools. At times three fish were hooked at once. The report was that approximately 60 King strikes occurred with many lost. Estimates were 30 fish were decked before the frenzy ended. Rowell got the big fish on a fresh Cigar minnow. It weighed 28 pounds 4 ounces. Over the weekend, Anthony, Brenda Dylan and others joined in the catch group. Sunday morning the bite was a small fraction of Saturday and since the fish have gone back in hiding.
Friday morning was reserved for Spanish. Several anglers caught their limits and many others decked multiple fish. It was fast and furious for a little while but soon diminished to none. Here is a sample of Brenda’s catch:
Kings and Spanish were not all we caught as the Red Drum were on the prowl. Nori landed a BULL off the end tee. It hit a Cigar minnow he was drifting for Kings. Tray, fishing with two of his friends from North Georgia, put this slot Red on his catch list after several days of disappointing fishing. I dropped a live Alewife down in skinny water to get an immediate hit from an upper slot Red. Several other slot Reds were decked over the week. Along with Reds, a nice Black Drum was decked. It was caught on a Sand Flea.
Sheepshead have slowly begun to filter in and feed off the pilings. However, they have been typically difficult to tease a bite from. Vince brought out the secret weapon and managed to get several to eat. He hooked five and landed three Thursday and repeaded his success Friday. Paul and I both tried live shrimp and sand fleas with not takers.
November is our Flounder month off the pier and it has been slow so far. A few fish have been decked daily but no limits so far. Von decided to target them and nothing else during his weekend trip. Tiger and Bull minnows were his weapons and that seemed to work. He hooked more than he landed with a pulled hook on two nice fish just as the net hit the water. He still had a good trip.
