Cooler temperatures, especially at night, have brought our water temp down. We are flirting with the 60’s which will possibly happen before the weekend. The water has finally cleaned. The wind has been predominately out of the North-Northeast which has helped in the water to settle out. A few bait have returned. Cigar minnows, Scaled Sardine and Alewives have been around most of the period. A few Bonita were caught but for the most part, they stayed too far out to reach. Kings were missing completely except for one small one. Spanish were around on Saturday but mostly small. There were a few others caught during the week but no limits. Sheepshead have been around the pilings in small numbers but have had lock jaw. The main game for the week has been Red Drum and Flounder.
Several “Flatties” cooperated with anglers and made their way to the table. Live bait was the most productive by set lines or slow troll along the bottom. Bull minnows, Tiger minnows, Small Cigar minnows and even small Squirrel fish got you a bite. The catches were all along the pier from skinny water out to the end. Rowell won the big fish prize with a 20.5 inch Flounder. He got several others during the week as well as Brenda, Paul and myself.
Red Drum were taking advantage of the small bait that surrounded the pier. They were mostly prowling under the pier. You had to be on your game as soon as they bit or you would loose them to the pilings. I lost several as they bolted straight for the pilings before I could grab the rod. It was unusual that more of the Reds caught were in the slot as opposed to the normal over-slot fish. Paul was getting frustrated as he had only gotten one Red in a week. We had fished all afternoon Tuesday with nothing but a Flounder in the box. I told him we had only a few minutes left before sunset. His wishes were rewarded as he landed a 26” slot 5 minutes before we were to leave. Then Wednesday afternoon we located a small school of slots and put 5 on the deck in about 20 minutes. Two went home with us and the other three were released.
It is time to introduce you to another of our Bay County Parks and Recreation staff.. Vince M. is a Pier Crew Leader. He has 11 years experience with Bay County. He holds Certifications as a USLA Lifeguard and Open Water Nitrox Dive. He is Turf Management Certified and has prior training in Carpentry. He is currently working on his BA degree in Parks and Recreation Management. Vince is charged with management of pier staff to include scheduling and preparing time sheets. His maintenance responsibilities include the Pier facility, 43 Beach accesses, 10 Parks small craft launches and all beach flagpoles.
