Our water is still cool averaging below 60 degrees and about 4 degrees below where we were last year. Combined with that, the clarity has been poor. It began to clean some today. We have had a few days of warmer temps and are forecast to have warm days over the next week so we should see those numbers improve. Red Drum and Sheepshead have been teasing us but few were willing to eat. Two days out of the seven produced the majority of catches.
Sunday, Several anglers were targeting Sheepshead only to have their stamina tested to the limit. Casey got lucky with an early bite and put the first Sheepy on the deck. Then Geo hung in there all day and managed to put three in his cooler. The rest of us were left disappointed. Of course a few guys were hoping for Reds. Jim decked his second one for his trip. It was over slot and went back after a quick photo.
Today, Wednesday, Sheepshead were thick with 8 to 10 fish on multiple pilings at once. We offered everything on their usual menu with total rejection. We had Ghost shrimp, Fiddler crabs, live Shrimp and Sand Fleas. They were not impressed and refused to bite. A small school of Red Drum came in and Rob brought an over slot fish over the rail. Again after a quick photo it was lowered back and swam off healthy. Later in the day several anglers had moved to the skinny water hoping something would show there. Dan S. spotted a small school of Pompano and got one to eat his jig. It measured 17 inches and would be the only one to hit the deck. We did see a large pair of Pomps swim by but they showed no interest.
