We had a slight improvement over last week with a few Kings, Spanish, Tarpon, Red Drum and the usual Hardtails caught. The only bait around has been Alewives. The water has hovered near 80 degrees with a dark coffee stain due to all the rain we’ve experienced. Our surf has been rough with dirty water.
The King bite was not hot but better than the past few weeks. Our best day came yesterday the 6th with about six fish hitting the deck. There were also several others hooked. The piling gods took two, “Flipper” the tax man one and a Baracuda cut two others. Bill K. had decked one for his birthday on the 2nd. . Hunter brought one over the rail headless and Nory finally got the hook to stay in one.
Tarpon activity seemed to be best early mornings and late afternoons. A few were hooked at other times but with a longer wait for wads of fish to come by. Swim baits seem to be the preferred bait but today there were a few hooked on live Alewives. Chartreuse swim bait was the hot color. Jackson L., John, Blaze, Mikel, Casey and several others had their time fighting the silver kings.
Shallow water produced a few Red Drum. It was too dirty to sight fish for them but a fresh Alewife soaked on a Carolina Rig was your best chance to get hooked-up.
We have a new Pier/ Bay County Beach Operations Manager. James Beattie comes to us from Kentucky where he was born and raised. His youthfull summers were spent with his grandparents who lived here in Bay County. He went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Western Kentucky University before his love for the area brought him back to Bay County where he accepted a position as a parks worker with the recreation department. It was not long before he earned a promotion to crew leader and is now being tasked as the new Beach Operations Manager. James hopes to make M. B. Miller Pier a great attraction for locals and tourists alike. If you have the opportunity, introduce yourself to James and welcome him to our pier community.
