We continue to have the dark coffee colored water due to all the rains. Tannic acid effects have been with us for weeks. Word is that clean water is about 3 miles offshore. Our clarity is good but just dark. Baits have been limited to Alweives and they were scarce the past couple of days. Tarpon, Red Drum and a few King/Spanish Mackerel have been caught.
King and Spanish Mackerel were caught but you had to put in a lot of time soaking bait to get a hit. If you want to use anything other than Alewives, bring them with you. Most fish have been small but I did get a report of a 25 pound fish caught early one morning. The angler was casting a swim bait for Tarpon and hooked it in the back. Pier fishing is always a surprise. On Friday, I was fishing live Alewife on a circle hook and a fluro leader beside another angler using a wire leader with frozen Cigar minnows. He hooked two Tarpon and I got two Kings. A pier dwelling Baracuda chomped one of them. Several other Kings were caught during the week. Jesus and Mikel decked decent fish.
Tarpon schools continue to cycle by the pier with the best action very early mornings and late day. Jet Ski and Boat traffic seems to push them further out and out of reach from the pier during the day. Live bait is getting hit often now but swim baits are doing well too. Most hook-ups end quickly with a spit hook but a few have been brought to the pier. Here is one that Casey got:
Shallow water has produced Red Drum. Reports were that both slot and over slot fish were caught. Live alewives were the best producer. Gary B. had a great week decking and releasing a number of fish. Here is a 29 inch Red he decked and released:
