Last week I wondered if we would ever get past the dark water. Friday, the water began to clean back towards the emerald green water we are used to. By Tuesday we were seeing our normal colors and clarity. However, so far, this has not vastly improved our bite. Kings continue to be rare and the Tarpon numbers are low. Bait remains to be Alewives with a scatter of Cigar minnows, Threadfin Herring and Goggle Eyes. Skinny water has been slow this week with only a few Reds hanging around. Our water temperature cooled to 84 but has quickly warmed and was back to 87 yesterday afternoon and peaked just under 87 today.
As I said, the King bite was very slow. Each day we saw a few fish and had a few strikes but only 1 or 2 fish hit the deck a few of the days. Ray from Alabama got the big fish for the week on Thursday with a 16.6 pound King. Then Friday there were a couple of small fish like this one Brandon got. Conditions were good but the fish just did not want to cooperate. The remainder of the week produced a few more small “scoolies”. Natural bait and lures were about equal for strikes.
A few Tarpon are still migrating through with little interest in eating. There were a few hooked but I am only aware of one being brought to the pier. Tommy L. was the lucky angler. He hooked it on the bar. The fish carried him to the beach and then to the end of the pier. It still wasn’t through and went to the west back corner before finally giving up at the southeast corner in front of the pier. Check the size in this 3 second video just before it was popped off and released.
Skinny water held a few spooky Red Drum. After hooking a couple, the rest of them would not let you get a bait near them. I did get one decked but it was over-slot and went back for another day.
