We had a full week of good water, bait and even a few fish. Water temperature has fluctuated from as cool as 81 to a high just over 87 degrees. The King bite was better and even a few Spanish were around. The Tarpon migration is about complete with only a couple of fish hooked during the past 7 days. Skinny water is holding big schools of tiny Alewives and the Bull Reds are taking advantage of that. A few Bluefish and Hardtails are being caught although most of the Blues are under size. Still no Sailfish or Mahi sightings but we are still hopefull. Rail space has been crowded as our visitor population is high. Expect traffic to be heavy as well.
The King bite was much improved over what we have had for a while now. Most days there were 4 or more Kings hooked. Our bait choices increased as we had tons of Alewives and good numbers of Cigar Minnows and Goggle Eyes. “Flipper” has been around often with groups of them at times. At least they haven’t been as big of a problem stealing our fish as usual even though they did eat 3 of our fish. Thursday and Friday were our best days. Thursday we decked 8 and Friday about a dozen including the big fish for the week. Danny, Phil and Tommy were some of the anglers that scored Thursday. Tommy and Granger got nice fish Friday. Granger took the big fish for the week with a 27.47 pound fish he caught about 2:00 pm. He had only made a couple of casts when the big fish hammered his bait. Talk about “show up hook up”. We had more “scoolies” than big fish but at least we had numbers of fish.
Spanish Mackerel were around but their numbers were few. We managed to put a few on the deck throughout the week but no one even got close to a limit. There were some nice ones like the one Mickel caught. Bait seemed to work better than lures.
