Our week started with clean water. We then moved to Tropical Storm Fred which arrived for the weekend. It brought us rough and dirty water. By Tuesday the water began to clear. South wind and a westerly current Tuesday night had us in dark Bay Water Wednesday morning. Talk about changing conditions! Bait choices included Alewives, Threadfin Herring and even a couple of baby Bonita in the mix. King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Red Drum, Bluefish, Ladyfish, big Hardtails, Sharks, Catfish, Remoras and even a Tarpon were some of the species for the week.
In spite of the conditions and the pier being closed one day for the weather, we had a decent King catch for the week. Brenda got the week started with a “schoolie” she decked. Hashid took the big fish award with a 31 pound King he got on Sunday. It ate a dead Alewife. Tommy caught the second King Sunday that was about 7 pounds. Monday we could not fish and Tuesday had us in stained water and hundreds of baby Sharks stealing every bait we offered. Wednesday started slow until George came out early afternoon and put two fish on the deck in about an hour. Mid afternoon I got slammed on a Threadfin Herring and had the fish ready to gaff. As I brought the fish to the gaff for a second try, the wire leader snapped. A short time later I got another hard and fast hit but no hook-up. Finally, I got a third hit and the drag began to sing. Brandon dropped the gaff and the 18 pound King hit the deck.
George was having a banner day Wednesday getting two Kings but that was the easy fight. Late afternoon, he was drifting bait when he was hit right at the piling. The line began to fly off the spool with the fish headed to the bouy east of the pier. It was a long and hard fight but George, wet with sweat, brought a nice Tarpon pier side for a few pictures. George then popped the fish off for a clean release.
Skinny water action was mostly limited to Bull Red Drum. There were several caught and released during the week. Live small Alewives were the hot bait. Gary B. got this 39 ½ inch fish this afternoon.
