The week started as we ended last week. High winds killed any chance of fishing over the weekend with nasty water a result. Sunday afternoon things began to change. The water settled and cleared some. Bull Reds and big Spanish Mackerel returned too. A few bait schools slowly came in. Hopefully the high wind and cooler temps put a stop to the Red Tide. Of three samples taken October 29th, the sample taken at Russel Fields Pier (City Pier) and the sample taken at Edgewater Beach still resulted as medium concentration of Kerenia brevis. However the sample taken between the City and County Piers resulted as low concentration.

Current Conditions
A patchy bloom of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persists along Florida’s Gulf coast, where cells were detected in 71 samples over the past week. Bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) were observed in 16 samples: one from Okaloosa County, five from of Bay County, four from Gulf County, two from offshore of Levy County, and four from offshore of Charlotte County. Additional details: In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background and very low concentrations in and offshore of Escambia County (in two samples), background to low concentrations in Santa Rosa County (in three samples), background to medium concentrations in Okaloosa County (in 12 samples), very low to medium concentrations in Bay County (in 16 samples).
Red Drum were thick on the outer sand bar Monday to Wednesday. The bite was not hot and furious but at least there was a bite. Most of the Reds were over slot but a few made the cut to be invited for dinner. Hachid, Carlos, Dawn, Tommy, Sam and Paul were a few of the anglers that put fish on the pier. It was Paul’s first fishing day back in town and he was rewarded with a couple of fish, one of which was 37 inches. Carlos decked the big fish that was 38 inches. Spanish were hot early mornings and a few were caught in the evenings. Schools of large Spanish were cycling by the pier. Lucky anglers were able to tease a few to their lures. Here is a shot of anglers decking Spanish and a shot of a nice one Carlos got.
