There was no signs of Red Tide around the pier the past week. FWC took no samples near the pier but did get three from Beach access 12 on west end of Saint Andrews Bay, Saint Andrews Bay and Tyndall AFB. The results were from west to east, very low, low and medium concentrations. The water has been from slightly silty to clean with the temperature ranging from 67.5 to 71 during the week. Bait was scarce with a few Cigar minnows showing today.
King Mackerel decided to give us a big surprise. After a pitiful year, the Kings showed in force Thursday. It began early and by 7:00 a.m. the deck of the pier was littered with fish. The bite continued throughout the morning and into early afternoon. Over 30 Kings were caught with at least that many lost or missed. Multiple times several fish were skying on bait, catching lures and spitting them as they returned to the water. It was a welcome sight after such a slow year. Colt Snipers and X-Raps were dominating the bite with only a few fish hitting natural bait. There were two Kings decked that were in the 18 pound range with the remainder smaller. Two fish were lost to sharks and one to “Flipper”. George had a King, he described as over 20 pounds, eaten by a large shark. The shark then got hooked by George’s lure. This battle went on for a while. Eventually the shark broke the line but not before a few quick pictures. Check these pictures of some of the action and sights during the melee.
The epic day ended with a pop-up rain a full ark rainbow.
Other action during the week included a few Bonita, Black Drum, Red Drum, a few Spanish Mackerel, a couple of Pompano and several Flounder. Even though we cannot keep any Flounder until December 01, it is good to know they are here.
