The water has been beautiful but the air cool. Water temperature has dropped to the coolest so far. Available fresh bait has been Squid and some Anchovies. Bluefish have been hanging out in schools with most being under size. There were a couple of Spanish Mackerel caught along with a couple of Pompano. Red and Black Drum were around part of the week.
Steve M. convinced a couple of Pompano to eat the Sand Fleas he was soaking. His was in the keeper size but others caught were too small. The bite was very slow.
Several Red Drum hit the deck during the week. Fresh Squid or blanched Sand Fleas got the job done. They were scattered but if you put in the time you had a good chance to get smacked. You also had to walk the length of the pier to find the small schools as they moved around quite a bit. Casey decked this slightly over slot Red Tuesday afternoon then I got a slot multi-spot Red a few minutes later.
Today, Wednesday, was our best bite even though only one “Big Ugly” hit the deck. There was a good size school of Red and Black Drum just outside of the outer sand bar. The problem was that they were all hanging under the pier. Jesus had one fish to take him into the pilings and cut off. I went 0 for 3 as everything I hooked cut me in the pilings. Finally, Robert won his fight and decked a nice Black Drum. Sand Fleas and fresh Squid was their choice bait.
