After last week’s blow, the water settled fairly quickly. Our water temperature hovered between 60.6 and 57.0 all week. This is the coldest that it has been. Rain, wind and cold air has made fishing miserable but a few anglers toughed through and caught a few fish. Bait was absent except for a few Squid. Bait wasn’t the only thing absent. The beach renourishment project is still in full swing. The dredge is working just west of the City, Pier Park, Pier. They are supposed to be finished this month.
Squid have been hit or miss with catches small. Very early mornings and the last hour before sunset has been the most productive. Brenda shows one of the bigger ones she braved the cold air to catch:
Gordon has been targeting Flounder all season and has been left disappointed until Monday. He finally decked his first ever Flattie and it was just over 14 inches. Wonder what was for dinner?
If it were not for the Red Drum, it would have been a boring and disappointing week. Fresh Squid was the preferred bait. Most fish caught were over slot but a couple were in slot and invited as special guests. Griffin got it started Thursday evening then Geo and Casey put a couple on the deck Sunday. Today, Wednesday, was the best bite with 4 fish caught. Terry got a 30 inch, Casey got one of the slot fish and I managed a slot and one just over. I had Sand Fleas, live Bull Minnows and fresh Squid. Only the Squid got bit.
