The water has been beautiful with it’s typical emerald colors. However, the temperature is still hanging in the upper 50’s. Hopefully after this next front coming in tomorrow night, things will start to improve. There are still in no bait fish. Squid catches have been decent with a few larger ones being caught.
It is time for the Flounder to return but they seem to be behind schedule. Only a couple were caught during the week even though several anglers have been targeting them. Live Bull Minnows have not produced many bites. Most of the Bull Minnows are getting chewed up by crabs. Tommy has been using a jig with Gulp. He did get one on Thursday.
Red Drum have been hanging in small schools under the pier. They have been very selective on bait but fresh caught Squid got the best results. I have been able to tease several to eat but have been unable to close the deal. I hooked four Monday and five Tuesday. All were lost, either to the pilings or broken line. Jim decked a big one on Valentine’s Day that measured 38 inches. He got a quick picture and released it.
Today, Thursday, Red Drum were again hanging under the pier but had a nice Black Drum in the mix too. I dropped a big Sand Flea in the group and found the “Big Ugly” willing to eat. It was 28 inches and went home with Paul as a special dinner guest.
Sheepshead have begun to show around the pilings. So far, they have had lock jaw.
