The water clarity has been great with the temperature starting at a high of 66 degrees. We then cooled back to 60.4 and finished the period at 63 degrees. Squid have been steady with anglers catching as many as they want depending on how long they jigged. I saw gallon buckets full for some of the fishermen. Most were small but there were a few big ones mixed in. We were cloudy a couple of days and the Squid were caught all day long. There were no bait fish around. One morning, Bonita were spotted too far out from the pier to cast to. No Pompano were sighted this week and no Flounder were decked to my knowledge.
February ended with only two Sheepshead hitting the deck. They have been around but have had chronic lock jaw. Geo was finally able to trick one to bite Feb. 27th using a frozen Fiddler Crab. It hit the scale at 7.2 pounds. Today, Mar. 02, Sheepshead were thick but again refused to bite. Several anglers even had fresh Ghost Shrimp with no takers.
A few small schools of Bull Red Drum have been hanging out, but for the most part, have stayed too far out to cast a bait to. Yesterday, after a long wait, the school moved close enough to toss a fresh Squid near them. I got the only bite. Of course it was a little too big to keep. So, after a quick photo, it was released. Today the same scenario plaid out but it was Butch that got the lucky bite. After a good fight he was able to bring his fish to the net. There was no question it was too big to keep and after another quick picture, the 36 inch Red was released.
We are into “Spring Break” so expect more crowded rail space along with congested traffic.
