We had great weather with warmer temperatures which has brought our water temperature to 68 degrees. The first Sting Rays moved into the skinny water. Squid are still around in good numbers. Yesterday’s and today’s fog/clouds allowed us to catch them all day. There were a few schools on Anchovies moving through during the week but I have not seen any other bait fish caught. A few Cobia fishermen have been on the rail trying to spot that first Cobia of the year but no action yet. Hopefully things are on the edge of breaking loose for the spring. It has been a long winter.
Red Drum have been active if you could locate the small schools. Fresh Squid and Sand Fleas seemed to be their best choice of bait. All Reds caught were over-slot and safely returned. Mikel, Casey and Paul got big Bulls. Mikel’s was 37 inches, Casey’s was 36 inches and Paul fought two in a 30 minute window that measured 33 and 37 inches.
A few Pompano showed Tuesday. Steve fished hard all day using Sand Fleas with a small piece of FishBite. He managed to deck 6 of which 4 were keepers. That is the best one day catch since last year.
In other action, young Gavin was fishing and caught his first pier fish. A nice Gafftop sail catfish. It made his day.
BAY COUNTY OUTDOORS in cooperation with Bay County Recreation is promoting a Cobia Pier Tournament on the M. B. Miller Pier. Registration is FREE and the form will be on the BCO web page. It is simple to register and only requires your Name, Phone Number and Email.
Entry begins 04-01-2022 and the close of the Tournament will be May 13th. at 6:00 p.m.
Tournament prizes will be tackle, no cash just like last year.
There will be two places:
1st: $500.00 equivilent of tackle
2nd: $350.00 equivilent of tackle
Sam Patrick will be the Tournament Official to Weigh and record all entries. I will weigh fish Sundays through Fridays between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm and on Saturdays between 1:00pm to 6:00pm. If I am not on the pier, you can call me at 770-267-2879 during the listed weigh-in hours. BCO said if you are lucky and have multiple fish, you can win in 1 or both places. In case of a tie, the first fish weighed will take the lead in that category. The fish must be caught on the M.B. Miller Pier. The fish must be hooked and caught by a single angler using a jig, lure or natural bait. FWC laws and regulations must be followed. All Bay County Pier regulations must be followed.
