The water has been beautiful and warm. The Cobia Tournament ends Friday the 13th, at 6:00pm. The King bite has been slow but slightly improved. Spanish are still around but the bite is slower. A few Pompano are being caught. Schools of Jack Cravelle and Tarpon have been coming by the pier. Hardtails and Ladyfish are thick. There were Cigar Minnows, Threadfin Herring, Scaled Sardines and some Alewives around.
Several King Mackerel were caught during the week with the better bite Monday and Tuesday. Monday there were 6 hits in the afternoon with one fish decked. Two were lost to the tax man “Flipper”, two hooks pulled and one to the piling. I finally gor my first fish of the year at 15.7 pounds. Tuesday afternoon there were no bites until after 5:00pm. Then there were seven hits with four fish decked. George got one and Rusty decked two. I didn’t get a name for the forth fish. Today Jose got two hits with “Flipper” taking both Kings.
Spanish Mackerel were still here with fewer fish decked than last week. They seemed more selective and would follow the baits without hitting them as often. However, there were still a lot of good fish caught. Mikel and George got a couple of “axe handles” along with Phillips big fish. Hose got a stud fish today just before “Flipper” could catch it.
Cobia anglers have been few as we close out the 2022 tournament. The Tournament leaders remain the same as last week. Casey’s 52.52 pound and Tyler’s 39.27 pound fish are holding. Sunday afternoon Bill K. made a perfect presentation to a nice Cobia. It inhaled his jig and gave quite a fight. It jumped and then tried to get into the pilings but Bill overpowered it. It would fall shy of the leader board but still a great catch at 32.12 pounds.
