The water continues to resemble the Caribbean. The Cobia Tournament concluded Friday the 13th, at 6:00pm. Kings are still missing in action. Spanish are following the Kings and have been few in the catch column. A few Pompano are being caught, mostly late evening. Schools of Jack Cravelle and Tarpon have been coming by the pier. Hardtails and Ladyfish are here. Bait is hard to come by. A few Cigs and Spanish Sardines were available if you spent a lot of time jigging. A few Red Drum were roving the shallows. Sheepshead were plentiful but the bite was zero.
The 2022 BCO Cobia Tournament leaders stayed on edge as the last week seemed to last forever. No new contenders brought fish to the scale and the Tournament officially ended at 6:00 pm Friday the 13th. This would be a lucky day for Casey and his 52.52 pound fish. He held the lead to win first place. Tyler and his 39.27 pound fish held second place. BCO and Howell Tackle are planning a presentation to the winners Friday afternoon at 3:00 at Howell Tackle. Casey and Tyler will receive their tackle from Rapala and it’s associated companies as well as a bonus gift from Howell Tackle. Between “Flipper”, Remora and no bait, the King Mackerel bite has been poor. There were three Kings hooked on lucky Friday the 13th. Other than that, it has been dead. Dean, Von and I each hooked a fish Friday. Dean was the only one to land his fish that weighed eight pounds. “Flipper” chased mine down and I only got the head back. Von had the same thing happen but got nothing back. Bait was their choice over lures. “Flipper has stayed with us constantly and resorted to eating our bait relentlessly. It was almost impossible to fish as the Remoras were thick too.
Spanish Mackerel are still in the mix but slow to bite. A variety of lures and bait worked for the few fish that were caught.
Roving schools of Jack Cravelle came through a few times a day. The chance to catch one was a challenge as they were not in casting range but a minute at a time. They were not picky and most lures got a bite. Landing them was another story. Most were lost to pulled hooks or to the pilings. However, several were decked like the two Norito and Tommy caught.
