Water clarity was good all week. The water temperature has dropped slightly but is still warm. We continue to have lots of bait fish around the pier. Alewives and small Hardtails are thick with a few Cigar minnows and Goggle Eyes in the mix. Good catches of small Spanish Mackerel were caught most days. Red Drum are prowling the shallows. Big summer Bonita have been caught all week. We went without any King Mackerel again until this afternoon. Small groups of Tarpon have come through but not many bites. Under size Bluefish were caught daily.
Again, Bonita have been our entertainment. The big summer Bonita tested our tackle and took many anglers by surprise with their erratic fight. Many were lost to the pilings. Thursday the bite was hot. I put 6 on the deck and several other anglers caught multiple fish. Lorenzo and his dad, visiting from Rome, Italy, were fishing and watching all the action. So, the next Bonita I hooked, I handed Lorenzo the rod and told him to hold on. Since he did not speak English and I sure don’t know any Italian, the communication was left to hand gestures. The expressions of excitement on his face were priceless as the Bonita screamed line off the spool. He fought well and we were able to communicate enough to get the fish to the gaff. What a great memory for him, his dad and me. That is what pier fishing is all about!
King Mackerel eluded us again this week and we thought we would end another week without one. However, today Nory broke the ice and put a “schoolie” King on the deck. He was casting his Colt Sniper when the fish hit. There were three other strikes and another fish that circled a bait five times but didn’t eat. I managed a tiny undersize King at the end of the day. Hopefully this is a positive sign.
We had a heavy thunderstorm pass through late afternoon today and left us with a beautiful double rainbow. The second one didn’t show in the picture but from the end of the pier you could see the entire bow.
