We have enjoyed great weather, clean water and better fishing this week. The water temperature has ranged between 75 and 78 degrees. Very early mornings and late evenings gave us a hot Spanish Mackerel bite. We had small Bonita several days and even a few King Mackerel. Ladyfish, Hardtails and Yellowtail Jack have been around daily. Huge schools of Alewives surrounded the pier all week and today (Wednesday) Cigar minnows were thick.
It has been slow coming, but the King Mackerel bite was better. Several were caught and more lost. Cigar minnows were the prime bait but there were a few hits on Ballyhoo, Alewives and small Hardtails. I got lucky and started the week off Thursday with a decent fish caught on a Ballyhoo. Anthony decked one Friday that ate a small Hardtail. Sunday, Debra, from Alabama, caught her first King from the pier. Today, Wednesday, Kings were on the chew. Many fish were hooked and lost. Flipper even ate his share early in the morning. Several hit the deck before I left at 6:00 pm. I finished my day with a 21.7 pound fish that ate a Cigar minnow. The bite was consistent most of the day.
Spanish Mackerel have been our main catches. Daylight and sunset was the prime time to fish. Many anglers caught their limits during the week. George got his limit Friday evening in just a few minutes of casting. Today the “Axe Handles” came in and were hungry. Cigar minnows were their bait of choice but a few hit lures. Here are a few of the nice Spanish that hit the deck today by Bob, Tommy and Hai. Tommy’s fish weighed 4.9 pounds. The first picture is of George’s limit.
We enjoyed great catches of small Bonita. I lost count of how many were caught but I saw coolers full departing the pier. Bubble rigs, flies and spoons were the hot bait. Larry and his wife Debbie tag teamed the Bonita. This was Debbie’s first Bonita too. George and Jackie put a pile on the deck as well.
