Cooler water and loss of most of our bait pushed most anglers to store their King rigs for the season. The target species shifted to Flounder, Sheepshead, Red and Black Drum. Whiting are also sought after but have been limited in their size and frequency in the shallows. The big schools of Red and Black Drum were not here like last week. A few small Spanish Mackerel continue to be around and are feeding deep and close to the pier. A couple of Bonita were caught as well.
Von decided to make one last trip from Georgia and take his chance on finding one more King before they vanish until Spring. Tuesday, the stars began to line up as we had strong wind, clear water and warmer temps. A few bait were around the end of the pier. Von cast his X-Rap numerous times and to his surprise a large King appeared from the depth. It charged his lure but would not eat. This happened a few times so he switched to frozen Cigs. Good move, as it resulted in two back to back Kings. One was 16.5 and the other 14.5. Jose cast his deep runner plug and hooked two Kings as well. One made it onto the deck and the other broke off. No other bites the rest of the day but being there at the right time paid off. Is this the last or will there be a late season fish?
The Flounder bite was slower this week but the patient angler could put a fish or two in his cooler. Tony drove in from Atlanta to target Flounder and Sheepshead. He had to work hard for it but he did get one Flounder to carry home. Kerim has worked the Flatties hard all week. He said it seemed that his limit was one a day but at least he was catching. Sunday, the hard work was rewarded with the biggest Flounder so far. We didn’t weigh it but it was pushing 4 pounds.
Sheepshead were displaying their normal behavior. We saw more than we could tease a bite from. However, Paul worked his magic and took several home for dinner. Paul wasn’t alone as Tony and Brenda were able to put one on the deck too. Ghost Shrimp are almost more than they can resist but a couple ate live shrimp.
Species caught: Bonita, King/Spanish Mackerel, Red/Black Drum, Sheepshead, Flounder, Bluefish, and Blue Runners. Bait: A few Cigar minnows & Spanish Sardine.
