I hope everyone had a great Christmas and your New Year has begun as you hoped. Our fishing has been slow but steady for this time of year. We have experienced some dirty water over the past couple of weeks. However, it has cleared nicely the past few days. Red and Black Drum, Sheepshead, Pompano and Bonita have kept our interest peaked. Flounder have been a challenge as I have only heard of two being caught in the past couple of weeks. The pier has become a little more crowded as our winter population of fishermen have arrived and are reporting to the pier for their chance to put a few fresh fish in their coolers.
Of course, fresh Ghost Shrimp have been your best choice to get bit. The bottom bite has been all over the pier from the end Tee back to the surf. Several slot Red Drum have been decked along with numerous Black Drum. The Blacks have ranged from small to over 25 pounds. Sheepshead have been hit or miss. Pompano have been slow to bite but a couple each day have kept us trying. Paul B. got a nice catch of Sheepshead and Pompano Dec. 29th. Dan, a visiting angler put a “Big Ugly” on the deck and I managed 4 Sheepshead and a Black Drum Sunday. Monday, Andrea caught her personal best Black Drum. Paul also got a Black Drum and Carlos decked a slot Red Drum and a Pompano.
A few small Spanish Mackerel continue to be seen with a few hitting the deck. Squid have not come in yet in numbers worth working for. A few were caught one morning but several anglers have tried with nothing to show for their efforts. It should not be long before they are here in numbers. Small schools of Bonita have been marauding the glass minnows around the pier however, they have been slow to hit our jigs.
Species caught: Spanish Mackerel, Red/Black Drum, Bonita, Sheepshead, Bluefish and Pompano. Bait: Bring your own.
