Tarpon, Kings and Red Fish

Event Start Date: 2022/07/07

2022/07/07

The water has been our traditional emerald color but the temp is warm. It has held just above 86 and the daytime temperatures have been brutal. Wind has helped but doesn’t get started until after lunchtime. The Tarpon bite has been fairly good with Saturday afternoon being the best bite of the week. A few Kings hit the deck along with some Spanish. Red Drum have been in the skinny water. Alewives are here but not as thick as normal. A few Cigar minnows were around most of the week.

Tarpon schools are swimming by early mornings and late afternoons. Many of the schools have come almost to the pier and then turn out too far to cast to. However, a good number of fish have been close enough and hit both Swim Baits and Live bait. Patience is the game to get hit.

Kings have been scarce all year. This week three legal fish hit the deck. Tuesday afternoon, Don was throwing a bone Colt Sniper when he got slammed. The fish was almost lost as the hook in it’s mouth pulled out leaving only the rear hook on the lure stuck in it’s belly. Luckily it held long enough to get the gaff in the King. Today, Wednesday, Two Kings were caught, both after lunch. I put a fresh live Alewife on and it was almost immediately hit. Jose did a great job with the gaff and I got the 12.74 pound fish on the deck. A short time later, Jose hooked a “schoolie” on his Sniper. Another King hit a dead cigar minnow a visiting angler was drifting under a cork but didn’t get the hook.

Skinny water action was mostly limited to schools of Bull Red Drum. Jackson had a good afternoon Saturday landing two fish over 30 inches. He got in the water with one of his fish for the safe release. That is about all you can do when there is no landing net available. Several other Reds were caught during the week.
